I like to experiment and found a cool technique on how to make your veins pop out especially if you want to highlight your leanness in a photo shoot.

I know I’m diverging away a bit from what I normally write about and it’s not really Zen minded but I like amuse myself.

It will only work if you are lean enough and then use food to explode internally that is to push your veins closer to the surface.

It’s simple and sort of enjoyable when I explain what you need to do but it only last a few days.

If you want vascularity (see those veins)  to last longer then have a look at my last months body transformation workout or have a look at these videos of Visual Impact.

Visual Impact is a body building fitness program that I used to get leaner and build some muscle and the bonus section is the “get ripped” section”. It uses effective and unique techniques to get a lean muscular look.

Anyways here is what I did to make it happen.

Starting off you need to be lean: guys 12% of body fat but less is better. I don’t think girls would want to try it but females need to be about 18% body fat if you do.

I’m around 10% plus or minus a percent.

For 2 weeks diet hard to lower your body fat %.

Over 2 weeks I used intermittent fasting (which is an excellent method of dropping body fat) I did 2  x 24 hour days each week but not consecutively, that’s too hard.

My “re-feed” day was a Saturday so on the day before i.e Friday, I de-hydrated where I drank very little fluids, be careful here don’t go too far.

On the Saturday, I couldn’t wait! This is where you eat 2-3 times as much food as you can.

I normally eat around 3000 calories per day or less. My maintenance level is about 2800 calories but my target on Saturday was 7000 calories but I could only manage to eat 5500 calories, I just couldn’t fit it all in.

My problem was I started off with unprocessed whole foods but they didn’t have enough calories, I was getting full too quickly so I had to turn to junk food (yeah) ! Maybe not a bad thing for some?

Saturday morning Sept2010

Sunday Afternoon 24 hrs later Sept 2010

That’s it:

Wait 24-48 hours and my veins came closer to the surface and I looked a lot harder.

So simple and relatively easy.

Here is my Re-Feed diet:

Breakfast:

1/2 cup of oats, 1 tbsp honey, 2 bananas, mixed nuts and seeds, Mocca coffee, apple, 3 eggs

Lunch:

1 whole BBQ chicken and skin ( I have been a vegetarian for 5 years but I thought I need to try this), 1 large fried chips and sauce

Afternoon tea:

250 gram yogurt, mixed nuts and seeds

Dinner:

1 whole vegetarian large pizza, cheese cake and 2 glasses of red wine.

Total 5420 calories

In doing all this I did make my veins pop out more than they normally do.

It can leave an impression of being leaner than you actually are, I really only did it for a bit of fun.

This is isn’t for everyone but the real idea I wanted to express is:

the importance of cycling your calories like re-feeding or some call it cheat meals!

So you need to “reset” your body for fat loss.

If you have been dieting for a long time make sure you eat up once and a while because your body will love it and so will your mind.

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

You can see the results on my last experiment for following a Crazy Celebrity Diet called “the Cabbage Soup Diet“.

Wow! Maybe I'll use this tactic in a month and go as The Incredible Hulk for halloween!

  • Joshua Noerr says:

Nothing like a good rebound Raymond! Bodybuilders always love that right after a contest.

    • Raymond Ho says:

haha yeah its sort of fun to watch in weird way.
But for sure I see a lot of people look better after a contest … Its like when I go on holidays most of times I look leaner and harder than when I was training
      Thanks for your comment

    Raymond,

Nice to see a vanity post thrown into your mix! This is a great tactic for a photo shoot or getting "event ready." My friends and I always talked up the "bicep vein" and it's only recently that I've been able to get it to show. The first step really is to get your body fat percent low enough.

    Raymond,
Cool post. I am similar to you in that this usually isn't important to me. I am interested however, in trying this just out of curiosity. I love experimenting with diet and fitness just to see what works! When I feel that I am lean enough I will try this for sure. I bet I have done this already unintentionally….with big cheat meals! Your veins popping like that totally makes you looked more ripped.
    Cheers,
    Jordan

Hi Jordan, Veins aren't pretty but it goes with the territory. Cheat meals work on so many levels …every part of you loves it especially if you have been restricting calories for a while! being a guinnea pig isn't that bad sometimes … Ok this will sound weird but sometimes I volutneer to try a new medicine out at the local clinic! :-p

  • Very cool stuff Raymond. I throw in a cheat day every week but I'll have to pay closer attention to see if my veins pop.

    • Raymond Ho says:

      Hey Dave,
haha don't pay too much attention i'm sure there are better things to do with your time!
but yeah cheat meals I must admit I haven't had a good one like that in ages .. it really does help the body and mind refocus

  • Interesting post mate.
The dude in the bikini is kinda hot too :)

  • That is one scary picture. Interesting post. I have never seen, or thought of something like that.

    • Raymond Ho says:

I was bored one weekend so I thought I'd play with the idea so for a couple of weeks I kept myself occupied.
yeah I would hate to meet up with her in the dark!

    I don't get the point!
Why would anyone need their veins to be seen through their skin? It's weird!

The woman there is a great example of how crappy it makes you look. It's like wanting to have a wrinklier face to look like an old man.

    • Raymond Ho says:

Yeah its not pretty but it seems to go with the bodybuilding territory, it gives them a sense of being ripped.
Especially on women I prefer a define but smooth look .. haha but it could be a fetish for some

    Thanks for the awesome post!

  • Raymond Ho says:

Thanks Bryan its fun to try and see what works and what doesn't fortunately this can be done rather quickly other type of tests need a much longer testing period .. I lose interest in those ones.

Ha, awesome post. Don't know how I missed it. The pro body builder woman – she gives me nightmares…

Raymond – thanks for writing this – might actually try it at some time. Though I am hesitant to reduce my H2O intake…

  • Cool post my friend! I have noticed that depending on what I eat, my veins show more or less. I also noticed that after fasting, I look pretty flat and then once I eat , I get a lot fuller. Kind of like when you carb load before doing a bodybuilding show.

  • Patrick says:

Ohh my! That's one cool technique right here. I'm not in any shape right now to even think about attempting this, however i have a cousin who's into bodybuilding big time. About to enter his first competition real soon.

Ill tell him about your post. :)

But man.. The 24 hr transformation is awesome and really quick! Amazing what the body can do!

    • Raymond Ho says:

Hi Patrick, haha its weird huh? you can do it any time but you are right being a bit leaner makes it more obvious.
PLEASE do an interview with your cousin, I'd like to see how he went about his first competition and post some pics I think that would make a great article
      Thanks for visiting

Wow my zen brother, that looks fun. I like the cheat day, its usually my sunday where I go crazy with meals and its true that even though It takes a few days to burn its the best thing to do to kick start your metabolism if you've been dieting.

BTW that girl is scary, wow.. at least I think its a girl… lol

  • Raymond Ho says:

Hey TFV, you are one busy vegan!
Cheat days are fantastic great for the mind and body ( I do regret eating a chicken though) you are dead right it does hit the RESET button.
I'm not sure if she is a he or she :-o

That is probably the scariest picture I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing the great info.

  • Awesome post. I’ve heard that Arnold used Cheesecake before contests to increase vascularity. Does higher fat food make it even more impactful?

    Darren@moreprimetime.com

    • Raymond Ho says:

Really I never heard of that I just like cheesecake but I guess the theory goes when your glycogen is depleted those type of high fat foods with the sugar carbs really feels up the muscles and make you look harder as opposed to flat!
      Thanks Darren for commenting Raymond

  • Adam says:

Great post. I'm not going to lie, that picture of the lady bodybuilder was disgusting ahahah.

  • Matt says:

Can I still workout while intermittent fasting?

    • Raymond Ho says:

      Hi Matt,
For sure it wont affect any muscle growth.
Some use supplements to help during the fast list BCAA or creatine or even simply a protein powder.
But I have never worried about it.
Try it and see how you feel.
      Thanks
      Ray
