Celebrities have a huge influence on us.

Everything they do is always in the spotlight and at times we want to copy “everything they do”.

One area that gets a lot of attention are their diets and workouts.

Some are spot on with their weight loss but some are so far off the track it becomes dangerous, here are a couple examples of crazy and not so crazy diets they follow.

You might be surprised which celebrity gets its right!

Jennifer Love Hewitt – The Grape Whisperer

This hard working actor would work on set for up to 15 hours a day.

Not having a lot of time Jennifer would go home and make simple but high carb (carbohydrate) meals of mashed potatoes, risotto and pastas and not having the time to work out took its toll on her body as the weight piled on.

When it got to the point that Jennifer felt she need to lose weight the first diet she tried was The Grapefruit diet (also known as the Hollywood diet)  a short-term fad diet.

Usually involves eating half a grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice with each meal and reducing caloric intake often to below 800 calories per day.

Based on the claim that grapefruit has a fat-burning enzymes, the diet significantly limits the amount of fruits and vegetables while encouraging meat intake; the combination of these high-fat, high-cholesterol foods with grapefruit is claimed to burn fat.

This diet is considered unhealthy due to the low 800 calories, you wouldn’t have enough energy for the day’s activities let alone energy for intense workouts.

It is a very strict diet plan for instant weight loss, BUT NOT a healthy diet.

Your body is going to miss out on some important nutrients not included in the diet.

A balanced diet should consist of 4 food groups. With the grapefruit diet plan, it is cutting out a couple of the food groups.

Even though it last only 12 days it’s long enough for your body go into starvation mode and really slow down your metabolism, which stops you from burning bodyfat.

Jennifer also tried taking apple cider vinegar pills which is suppose to be good for removing belly fat but admits she didn’t notice any difference  so after 2 weeks gave up.

The latest craze is called the charcoal diet.

Girls Aloud singer Sarah Harding is a fan, claiming eating carbon gets rid of toxins.

Harding sprinkles it on food and says it helps her tone up.

Rather charcoal has been used to stop the body absorbing poisons since the 19th century.

It is allegedly good for hangovers and stops flatulence, great if you happen to be near a flame!

But seriously you lose weight by a lifestyle shift of nutrition and exercise by eating less calories than your body requires.

If you like to know about the easiest and most efficient method of lowering body fat that works read Eat Stop Eat.

Gwyneth Paltrow the 37 year old actress looked like a very healthy person on the outside but she has been diagnosed with osteopenia, resulting in bone density of an 80 year old!

Nutritionist blame her macrobiotic diet of the last 11 years as the cause even though she exercises up to 3 hours a day (which is way too much, an efficient exercise routine needs only to be 45-60 minutes x 3-4 times per week like the one found in  Visual Impact, on how to develop a hot lean Hollywood body).

Below is Tracy Anderson ( Celebrity Trainer) video showing why Gwyneth needs 3 hours to workout when it really should only take a third of the time! (Thanks Darrin from LeanMeanVirileMachine for the video).

Other followers of the macrobiotic diet are celebrities like Madonna, Kim Kardashian and Carmen Electra.

The diet requires eating plenty of vegetables, wholegrains fruit and minimal quantities of fish while discouraging dairy and red meat.

Alcohol, chocolate, hot spices, sugar and coffee are also avoided.

The American Medical Association considered this type of diet a major health problem.

This diet is often lower in protein than other diets and is unbalanced in supplying important nutrients.

Brown rice normally an ideal food but the macrobiotic diet turns it into a principal ingredient.

The emphasis is upon 50% grains and only 5% of raw vegetables, the supply of vitamin C and vitamin A are minimal as well as vitamins D, zinc, calcium, and iron.

The excessive inclusion of seaweed and sea vegetables introduces considerable sodium into the diet, not helpful for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels.

One of the reasons why we try to eat a balanced nutrition plan is because foods can assist each other in becoming more effective.

For example you need calcium to build strong bones, vitamin D helps increases absorption rate of calcium i.e one can help the other.

Do not follow diets that exclude essential food groups, if you leave out a whole food group then you’re going to be low on something.

Kelly Osbourne

During her journey on “Dancing with the stars” 2009 she ended up losing 19kgs.

She is now gym regular and visits 3 times per week.

She had ditchend junk food for a diet free of sugar and carbohydrates.

Kelly says “While not eating carbs is killing me the sacrifice is worth it.”

Not a bad plan but the fact of having a low carb diet means that body’s source of fuel for energy will have to be found elsewhere, the extreme case is a condition called ketoacidosis.

Jessica Alba has found the best routine to lose weight and look hot where she combines bursts of cardio with strength training which is a very metabolic challenging style of interval workout.

She uses a 3-2-1 method meaning every day she eats 3 meals, 2 snacks, drinks at least 1 ltr of water.

Jessica eats lean meals of protein, complex carbs, healthy fats and snacks combination of fibre and protein to keep full (eg apple and piece of mozzarella cheese) it’s an excellent balanced nutritional food plan and her exercise routine compliments the whole weight loss program.

Of all these actors, Jessica has got the best overall long term solution of being healthy due to its simplicity.

Keeping it simple by consuming mainly unprocessed natural whole foods and not isolating food groups provides the easiest way to lose body fat and maintain weight.

Don’t be in a hurry, losing body fat it will become easier over time as you determine what works for you and you won’t need all those diets, pills, supplements and gadgets which come down to wasting your time and money.

First off, you gotta tell me where I can find that bacon soda!

While many celebrities can give you a good idea how to kill yourself on some unsustainable fad diet, few are good role models in having good permanent solutions that will keep you high-energy and long-living.

Here's a funny video of Gwyneth Paltrow working out with her personal trainer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzUwfNQ8gRc "No woman should lift more than 3 lbs." Wha???

    • Raymond Ho says:

haha Darrin some how I thought you'd like the Coke .. if I ever can get my hand on a can no matter where in the world you are I'll send it to you!

Yes some actors get their diet & workouts perfect but other others well! ….

Thanks for the Gwyneth video, its great on how NOT to work out .. no wonder she workout so long so in effective .. I might even add it my post …so Thanks again!

  • Craig Avera says:

You're absolutely right… celebrity influence is everywhere around us! For style, diet and workouts especially it seems. I've tried many of the extreme diets that celebrities have endorsed and while they might work, they are not sustainable in the long run and you'll be way better off eating a manageable and sustainable diet that is designed to promote longevity and wellness.

The low carb diet is one that I would actually recommend for a certain percentage of people, but all those other crazy fad diets should be thrown out the window forever! Great post!

    • Raymond Ho says:

Its fun though the celebrity watch and see the crazy things they do … I do like low carb cycling I think it really does work .. thanks for visiting

  • Raymond,
Celebrities are certainly not like the rest of us. They tend to go too extreme to either look good for a role or the paparazzi. I remember Christian Bale lost 1/3 of his weight for the Machinist by pretty much starving himself and then added 100lbs for Batman. Definitely not a healthy lifestyle.
    Dave

    • Raymond Ho says:

Yeah Dave , they start out normal then when they become famous live on another planet … Christian Bale really? I'll have to look at that one
      thanks for visiting

  • Alykhan says:

    Raymond,

Some of the fad diets are way too gimmicky. I believe simplicity is best. I'm a big fan of Eat Stop Eat because it allows you to eat whatever you want. You don't need to restrict yourself to one type of food or avoid certain foods and this is critical for sticking to your eating plan long-term.

  • Raymond Ho says:

    Hey Alykhan,
Seriously I sometimes think maybe those fads they do work and I get close to trying it out.. then I wake up and tell my self stop being stupid … but I think alot of people do go for it!
yes fasting seems to help nearly everybody lose bodyfat.

  • thefittestvegan says:

The celebrity diets are dangerous, I dont believe in them always. good wholesome real food is the way to go. Jessica Alba does look great, she might be on to something with the 3-2-1, its easy to remember.

  • FitXcel says:

    Bacon soda sounds amazing.

  • Tim D says:

It's funny that a lot of these fad diets do work for a little while – your body can survive off a low calorie diet for a couple of weeks – but if done to long can be hazardous to your health. I try to tell people all the time not to copy anything that celebrities do because most of what they do is just unrealistic to the average man or woman.

    • Raymond Ho says:

you are right they do seem to work but as soon as you stop the weight loss stops and you are back where you begun or worse you have put on more weight… its all a lifestyle change!
      Thanks for visiting

  • Clint says:

It's a shame so many people look up to celebrities as their basis for getting lean. They are meant to look good for a living and more often than not, we are seeing them airbrushed or down-lit to the point where we have impossible aspirations to live up to.

    Damn you photoshop :)

    • Raymond Ho says:

I remember when Demi Moore was over air brushed and it caused a huge stir and yeah get the right light and you can look amazing … I look in the mirror and think need more shadows ..haha
      Thanks for visiting

  • Waisthipsandthighs says:

Great post Raymond! And though I agree that celebs are not the average the problem is that more people are going to listen to them as to someone who actually knows what they are talking about. I get more views on my blog when it post celeb diets workouts etc. than anything else. Bacon soda? WOW!!

It is such a shame what people will do to lose weight! The right way to do it is all around us. The information is right here on this blog! The problem though is that people don't want to do the work that it takes and are always looking for a quick fix or an easy way out.

Great post, Raymond. This just gives us another reason not to look at celebrities as role models!

    • Raymond Ho says:

I hate putting people on pedal stools and idolising them unless they really do deserve it … I love sporting stars and what they can do for their sport but I wont suddenly put them in a league of whatever they say must be true … and hey we are humans we always want a quick fix!
      Thanks for visting

  • Yavor says:

Raymond, I found out about Gwyneth recently. It's a shame really, especially since she's a role model for young girls. But believe me it is super hard to talk *sense* into such a women until a diagnosis like this comes. The reason for this is that a girl like this loojs fine externally, especially in clothes..

    • Raymond Ho says:

yes it is a shame, its weird how trying to be healthy can produce the opposite effect .. I hope the stuff we blog about help with the right approach and minimise any of those dangers. Celebrities are quite like that outside all looks normal , whats going on the inside it total turmoil
      thanks for visiting

  • Anna says:

Raymond, simple really wins when it comes to nutrition plans. I remember the days when I used to count every calorie I ate and didn't want to eat out because it wasn't part of my meal plan. It was horrible! I now live a fairly easy and healthy lifestyle thanks to Eat Stop Eat and other fasting variations.

    • raymond says:

For sure keeping it simple means you can manage to sustain for a lifetime, I tried counting calories too but there is more to life than worrying about writing what you eat in a note pad.
Thanks for visting, I appreciate your input

  • Clement says:

Hey Raymond, how about commenting on the TAYLOR LAUTNER TRANSFORMATION that has everyone up in arms nowadays? He's pretty darn impressive, having gone from 140Ibs to I-dunno-how-much lean muscle mass. But is it really possible to "bulk" and stay lean? Jay Ferruggia certainly thinks so – as he says, it's a given as long as you're "under 20, an athlete, or both". He recommends (18 X bodyweight in Ibs)kcal a day to start with, but I've heard of others recommending 25 X bw! According to Vince Delmonte's quotations of John Berardi's calorie counting guidelines, I should be consuming 3500kcal a day!

I hope I'm not putting you in the spotlight here, but do you think it's really possible to pack on massive amounts of muscle and minimize fat gain on these kinds of numbers?

    • raymondgho says:

Hey Clement, no problems thanks for the suggestion I'll do a post in the near future when I get some facts on Taylors transformation. Lots of people say that you can bulk and stay lean but I haven't really seen it before.. it usually one or the other… some cycle it closely together so it might seem that way. Jay Ferrugia knows what it takes being under 20 for sure but older guys can do it to maybe not as easy. I would follow 18 x and see how it goes slowly increasing until you get results ..we are all different and following an exact formula is not the best but as a guide line … Vince's 3500 seems too high to get straight into it. I don't think you can be ripped and bulk at the same time .. I think you would bulk to a point … back off so your fat doesn't go too high and bulk again … when you at the size you want to be then CUT and get really ripped. So for me the secret is in cycling foods, workouts and cardio. Thanks for your visit and comments I appreciate it

  • when is jessica alba going to come out with another movie? it’s been forever!

  • I have been dieting for months now and it’s a contant fight. I appear to be having a tough time raising my metabolism.

    • Raymond Ho says:

Hi Catrice, I have found with myself after dieting ( low calories) for a long time my metabolism slowed down too, your body doesn't want to starve itself so its a normal reaction. What works is a good feed especially of carbohydrates anything from one meal up to a whole day of eating well, then resume dieting again, this will stimulate your metabolism, hormones, and even your mind. Depending on how much weight you want to lose will depend on the frequency that you do this. If you haven't try it then please consider giving it a go.
